Barbara (Wonacott) Dawson 1924-2021

Barbara was born April 7, 1924 and passed away February 12, 2021 in Bishop Ca.  Barbara was born in Bishop to Albert (Bob) and Carrie Wonacott.  She grew up on the family dairy with her older siblings Thelma, Thomas and Archie; she attended school at the West Bishop School.  When she was 15 ½ she began her career as a telephone operator at Contel.  She would work in the mornings milking cows and then go to work at the phone company, only to return in the evening to milk the cows again.  After finishing High School she went full time at Contel.  She soon married Horace “Doc” Evan and had her two daughters Arnetta and Leslie.   She remarried in 1968 to Fred Dawson, and the bought and owned the Coachman Restaurant here in Bishop.  In the early 1970s she and Fred sold the restaurant and purchased the Diamond A Rodeo Company.  In 1985 Barbara and her daughter Nita transferred with Contel from Bishop to Gardnerville, NV.  She worked another 4 years at the telephone company in Gardnerville, and retired from the phone company with 50 years of service.   Soon after retiring from Contel, she went to work as the PBX operator at Carson Valley Inn where she worked for 20+ years.  After retiring from Carson Valley Inn, she spent most of her time watching her granddaughters show livestock or play sports.  Barbara always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met.  Every Christmas she would call friends and family and tell them her Christmas Poem.  She always had a joke or a funny poem to tell.  Barbara will be missed by many, as she touched many people’s lives.  She is preceded in death by her mother and father Bob and Carrie Wonacott, Sister Thelma and husband Roy Brown, Brothers Thomas and wife Kathleen Wonacott and Archie and wife Lenore Allison. Nephews John and Bob Summers.  She is survived by her daughters Nita Vick of Gardnerville, NV and Leslie Manzonie and Andy Richard of Bishop. Granddaughters Shea and husband David Brown of Bishop, and Skyler Zulian of Gardnerville, NV. Nephew Jim and wife Nita Summers of Lake Tahoe. As well as numerous  great nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Saturday February 20, 2021 at 11 am at the Pioneer Cemetery on West Line St in Bishop, Ca due to covid there will be no reception to follow. A celebration of life with be held in Gardnerville,Nv at a later date.   In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of choice.  Masks are required.
